Leaking Nappies

Why are my nappies leaking?
♦ Have you used barrier creams (oil-based creams)?

Solution: Please do not use barrier creams with these nappies. These creams create a build up on the suedecloth/microfleece and can cause the nappy to leak. If your baby has nappy rash please use water-based creams. To get rid of creams on the suedecloth/microfleece perform a strip wash, outlined in the FAQ section. You can also use a liner (placed on top of the suedecloth/microfleece) if you with to use creams. Raw silk is a great liner if your baby has a nappy rash. Also give your baby lots of nappy-free time.

♦ Have you used fabric softeners or bleach?

Solution: Please do not use fabric softeners or bleach on these nappies.

♦ Are you only using 1/4 to 1/2 of the recommended washing powder/liquid?

Solution: You need to only use a 1/4 of the recommended washing powder/liquid. If you have used more, your nappies may have a build up of powder/detergent on them. Please perform a strip wash, outlined in the FAQ section.

♦ Where is the nappy leaking?

Firstly, if baby's clothes are getting wet please ensure that the clothing has not been tucked into the nappy.

If the nappy is leaking at the legs then the nappy may not have been put on tight enough. If the nappy is gaping at the legs then it needs to be put on tighter or use a smaller rise setting.

If the nappy is leaking at the back, ensure that the insert is not sticking out the top of the pocket opening. Make sure that the suedecloth/microfleece is not sticking up further than the outer layer at the back.

If the nappy is leaking at the front, ensure that the insert has been inserted all the way and that it is lying flat.

If the nappy seems like it is leaking through the outer layer, then the nappy is most likely full. Add more inserts or change more frequently.

Sometimes the nappy will leak due to these things. Sometimes it is necessary to perform a strip wash or perhaps the nappy is just full. A nappy can only hold so much. If your nappy leaks and the insert/s is soaked you need to either change more often or add more inserts. For further instructions on how to perform a strip wash please see the strip wash information in FAQ.

How do you perform a strip wash?
Sometimes it is necessary to perform a strip wash. To do this just wash your nappies in the machine with a small amount of dishwashing liquid (a teaspoon) using hot water (no more than 60 degrees celcius) several times and then rinse in water several times. Dry nappies in the sun.

If you have a front loader just wash the nappies on hot (no hotter than 60 degrees celcius) several times. Dishwashing liquid is not recommended in front loaders. Dry in the sun. This may need to be performed two or three times.

A ’Strip’ wash is sometimes needed to get rid of any washing powder/liquid build up or barrier creams which could cause the nappies to leak or could cause nappy rash.

If you need to use a barrier cream please place a liner inside the nappy first or use water-based creams. Give your baby lots of nappy-free time. Raw silk liners are great for nappy rash.
